Pysanyj Kamin – Building for the next 60 years

The Plast campground (oselia) of Pysanyj Kamin (PK) was purchased in 1965.  At that time there was little, if any, infrastructure on the site. The first camps were held in 1966 and water had to be trucked in from neighboring farmers.

Over the last 10 years, the PK Regional Camping Committee (OTK) has completed approximately $560,000 in projects.  OTK is a group of volunteer camp directors responsible for the organization of camps and their staffing, as well as the upkeep of facilities, and maintenance of property. The major projects include: new cabins, a new pavilion, a modernized pool chlorination system, renovated paths around the campground, the installation of various bridges, and, most recently, the kitchen was renovated and expanded.

PK volunteers have been and continue to be the backbone of PK.  PK camps are successful because so many families volunteer their time and energy.  Volunteers maintain the property all year long, and they provide the staff for the first aid hospital, administration, and the kitchen.  They provide all the maintenance, as well as taking key roles during off-site trips and excursions. PK workers and volunteers have refused over $75K in salaries or expense reimbursements.  An additional $56K has been provided via in-kind donations.

The current bathhouse was built in the 1980’s.  Due to structural and cost effectiveness issues, the existing bathhouse must be demolished, and a new bathhouse rebuilt on the same site.  The number of shower stalls will increase, an improved water filtration system and sizable supply closet will be added, along with a second floor to accommodate ten small rooms for volunteers.  This project also includes an ADA compliant bathroom, to be located near the kitchen.

PK has raised $100,000 toward construction costs of approximately $200,000.  The Plast USA National Board of Directors (KPS) has agreed to join PK in raising the additional $100,000. KPS is actively soliciting Plast branches (stanytsi), fraternal groups (kurini), groups, and individuals to donate to this project.
